PAI GOW

Back to games help

1) Description and objective

Pai Gow Poker is a gambling game based on the Chinese domino game Pai Gow. It is different from the domino game in that it uses a 53 card deck (1 joker) and uses poker combinations to determine who wins.

2) How to play

  • Select a chip value on the right side of the table
  • Place your bet in the "Bet" field.
  • Click "Deal" to start the game.
  • 7 cards are dealt face up to the player and 7 cards are dealt face down to the dealer.
  • Select 2 cards that will be moved to the low hand by clicking on the cards. Click the card again to move it back. If your choice is an invalid combination (eg. your lower hand outranks your high hand), the second card of your selection will be prohibited and you will hear an error sound. Please make another choice and if necessary change the first selected card too.
You can also split your cards automatically (using the same rules for splitting as the dealer) by clicking on the "Houseway" button.
  • Click the "Deal" button to confirm your selection and to split your hand. The dealer's cards will then be revealed. When you clicked "Houseway", you confirm the selection automatically.
  • Your 2 hands and the dealer's 2 hands are now compared (high hand with high hand, low hand with low hand) and result is evaluated. Winnings are put on the table and are added to your balance.
  • Click "Rebet" to wager the same bet as in the previous game or simply place a completely new bet to start a new game.

3) Specific game rules

Pai Gow is played using a 53 card deck.(standard 52 card deck + one joker) The player and the dealer are dealt 7 cards and need to split them in 2 separate hands : A five card hand referred to as the high hand and a 2 card hand referred to as the low hand. The high hand must always rank higher than the low hand.

Example: 5 8 7 Ace King King 2: You cannot play the pair of kings to the low hand as this will outrank the high hand.

The object of the game is to have both hands rank higher than the dealer's hands. If this is the case then the player wins 1 to 1 minus a 5% commission for the bank. If one hand ranks higher and the other ranks lower than the dealer's hands then this results in a push. If both hands rank lower than the dealer's hands, then the dealer wins the game.

Pai Gow uses standard poker ranks to determine who wins with the exception that the highest possible high hand rank is 5 Aces. (4 Aces + joker) This combination beats a royal flush.

In the event that the player and the dealer have the same rank (ex: both a pair) then whoever has the highest pair wins. If the pairs are of the exact same value (ex: both a pair of 2's) then the value of the remaining cards is used to determine the winner.

When the dealer and the player have the exact same card values this is referred to as a "Copy hand". When this occurs the dealer wins the game.

The joker may only be used as an ace or to complete a flush, straight, straight flush or a royal flush.

You can choose to have the dealer automatically split your cards for you using the rules employed by the casino. This is called a "house way" split.
